Quick tests for bacterial infections are out there, but insurers won’t cover them and doctors are reluctant to use them. Prof. Dr. Herman Goossens, VALUE-Dx project coordinator, tells us that cutting down on unnecessary prescriptions of antibiotics would help reduce rates of antibiotic resistance. But even though the technology exists, it’s not in widespread use. The VALUE-Dx project set out to find out how much these diagnostic tests would be worth to society in the long run.
